Domtar is a “Founding Partner” of GMP

Founding Partner: Domtar - The Sustainable Paper CompanyGreenMyParents is thrilled to announce support from Domtar – The Sustainable Paper Company as a Founding Partner. It marks Domtar’s latest push to promote ongoing forest conservation and environmentally responsible paper products, which have earned the support of respected environmental organizations such as the Rainforest Alliance and The Nature Conservancy. As a Founding Partner, Domtar will work closely with GreenMyParents to bring unique, youth ecological and economic insights to forestry and paper issues at home, in school, at mom and dad’s office, and in the community.

A few key sustainability practices GMP loves about Domtar:
Forest Stewardship Council

  • Domtar is expanding its use of Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®) certified products
Domtar is committed to FSC certification for all its forests and facilities. GMP Youth know you can’t improve things if your aren’t keeping score, and better still is a third party certification to increase transparency and accountability with credible roles.
  • 78% Energy Self-Sufficiency at Domtar’s paper mills
Domtar pulp mills use over 90% of the wood they consume. Half of the wood is used as biomass to create renewable energy. Imagine if your school, local government buildings and communities could generate 78% of needed electricity from renewable sources. GMP Youth are working to power their home, school and the economy with renewable energy.
  • Domtar reduced Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions 34% since 2002 levels
Imagine if every GMP household reduced its emissions by 34%. We could exceed the “20% by 2020” suggested by leading climate scientists and activists. GMP Youth know that reducing emissions makes business sense today to save money on fuel and energy and tomorrow to compete better in a sustainable economy.

Learn more about Domtar’s industry leading sustainability practices on the web or in their 2009 Sustainable Growth Report. Lewis Fix, Domtar’s Vice-President of Brand Management and Sustainable Product Development, said:

“For the sake of our planet’s future, we need today’s youth to help seed the green economy, and it’s wonderful how GreenMyParents is making kids the Chief Sustainability Officers in their homes. We’re excited to work with GreenMyParents and help show how powerful and effective kids can be in bringing about change.”
